November Campaign Design

I saw this link on Google Plus and decided it was worth a shot. As a part of NaCaCreMo, I will work on fleshing out the Samoora Sea setting.

The goals for this project are:

  • It'll be compatible with The Black Hack, at a minimum. Swords & Wizardry, too, if I am lucky.
  • There will be non-standard races, extra classes, meaningful magic items (not just +1 items), and monsters.
  • There will be at least one complete map and accompanying descriptive text
  • It will be in a playable (not necessarily publishable) form by November 30
  • It'll have at least one new magic system.

The Red Concordant is my take on The Black Hack that includes my house rules and a few more things left out of the original. When I say compatible with The Black Hack, I mean compatible with both, assuming I get The Red Concordant finished. The conclusion of this project will put me about 90% of the way to completing The Red Concordant.

The races include some I've written about here before; uplifted dolphins (I never read the books), trans-dimensional fire elementals, and lizardmen-tigers. I may include one or two more traditional races, just to provide some common point of reference to more traditional fantasy settings.

I actually hope to have more than one magic system. The choices include psionics, salt magic, converting The Fantasy Trip spells to The Black Hack, casting spells with a chart, the cult of hot iron, and clockwork. It sounds like a lot, but with TBH, a new magic system is a mechanic, some fluff text, and a spell list.

Wish me luck. Any and all feedback, even negative, is welcome.

There is a unifying concept behind all the various projects I write about in this RPG development collection.

The entire area is called the Samoora Sea.

Color Coded Magic
The spells broken up by color project deals with Salt Magic, a style based around the region named Camalanth. This region is home to 99.9% of the mines for Five Color Salt. Normally, the colored salts are used for seasoning food, but a few gifted individuals can use the salt to perform magic.

In the project, the colors will help determine spells available in that style.

Chart-based spellcasting
On the island of Porta Nile, live the crabmen. The Crabmen's gleaming metal tower is rises above the dense jungle and is visible from miles. A colony of humans and other friendly species live on the northwest corner of the island. Most are escaped prisoners of the crabmen with a few shipwreck survivors.

To defend themselves from the Crabmen and their alien devices, the survivors have taught themselves a peculiar magic style based on charts and runes.

Playing Card Subsystems
Penfro is considered the last outpost of civilization in Camalanth. East of Penfro lies a barren wilderness that separates the Samoora Sea from the Eastern Kingdoms. Gambling is common, especially during boom times. Dice and card games are the most popular forms.

A strange religion is found here called the Cult of Hot Iron. Ritualized duels and magic based on generating walls and containers are its two main features.

Spelljammer for The Black Hack
In Gaerleon are many gates connecting to far-flung cities and locales. Villefar is more commonly known as The City of Pathways. It is believed that if you can reach Villefar, you can even travel to the stars.

This November, I will be working to put the pieces together.

I was looking at Beaker Browser this morning. Very cool and absolutely not related to RPGs at all.

As far as my project to translate TFT spells to The Black Hack, I will post here when I finish the Creation spells.

I decided that One Hex, Three Hex, Four Hex, Seven Hex versions of the same spells will use Size categories from the d20 srd. I don't like this solution, but I couldn't come up with another way of translating these spells.
